Today I made the decision to leave a great position with the Northern Door YMCA. This a great organization with terrific leadership. The staff are super friendly. The position and people made my decision to leave even more difficult. I had been there two days. My position was Building Maintenance Coordinator.
The Friday before I was slated to begin I had an interveiw with Good Samaritian Elderly Care Center in Sister Bay. I really connected to the thought of working for my elders, because I was raised by my grandparents when my parents passed away.
I had always thought my lifes mission was to make a difference in the lives of others and the position I will take on covers that lifes mission piece.
Time with my family also played a role in my decsion. My wife is a school teacher and we have twin three year old boys.
The YMCA job was great for me. I have a degree in recreation and its a recreational organization. The hour of 5pm- 1am work great finnacially due to cost of child care. Plus I am selfish and want to be with my little guys.
It however gave me little time with my wife during the week. She would essentially have worked hard all day and have to chase three year old twins around by herself until bedtime.
I think putting my family first is most important.
I was given the choice of positions at Good Samaritan. I chose to be a Universal Worker. I will be doing many different things. I was conflicted with all the great options and scenarios. I nearly turned down Good Samaritian Tuesday. However on Wednesday I dug deep, and the answer was easy. I chose a position where I could make a difference in someone's life.
The hard part is letting the Y know, but I did. I didnt come to door county to burn bridges. I did come here to make a difference. I made the most heartfelt thoughtful choice I could make.
No matter how you dice it Door County has jobs right now, so if you put in a little effort you might just snag a job that is right for you and your situation.
